In this photo-documentary I capture my experience being a server to understand the community, the culture, and the work habits that I was learning. I found being a server was a difficult job as one must simultaneously juggle the roles of service, food expert, and entertainer all the while balancing the myriad of emotions that present themselves both in the back and front of the house. My documentation and studies of this experience have led me to present my work in the form of a book and a photo exhibition supported and awarded by the UCONN Scholars program in 2019.
In 2022 I continued to work on this project by creating a second-edition photography book. I expanded on my experience and included more images from that period to bring to light the stories and appreciation for restaurant service work. I find it important to discuss the intricacies and complexities of restaurant work, which is so often overlooked but still deserves recognition. I have printed and self-published 10 copies of this book.
